Increasing Interpersonal Effectiveness

In a recent study, executives earning more than $250,000 a year were asked the primary factors for their success. According to Lamalie Associates, the #1 factor was Building Effective Relationships with Others. Increasing versatility has a strong correlation to success.

If a leader has low versatility and ineffective interpersonal skills, their chances to succeed are greatly reduced. Increasing versatility is often difficult for some managers. Sending someone to a seminar may not create change, however a personal coach can be a good alternative. We have seen very powerful behavioral change take place with executive coaching.

Typically executives with low versatility scores ("W" or "X" versatility) have less endorsement from others. They usually have trouble relating to others. They are usually more concerned about reducing their own tension, and less concerned about other's tension. As a result, their interpersonal skills suffer.

Versatility is comprise of four factors as illustrated below. Using an online multi-rater assessment, we measure the leader's appropriate use of image, presentation, competence and communication with others.

Since managers must have superior interpersonal skills, typically begin a coaching assignment by measuring interpersonal effectiveness or versatility. This is usually done online using a validated and tested instrument that measures Social Style, which was originally developed by Merrill and Reid of Tracom, the original developers of the model.   This rigorously-tested process has helped countless leaders build better and effective relationships. After the assessment, leaders learn Social Styles using a blended learning program.  An executive coach guides them through the program, helps them interpret their report, and developed a specific action plan to increase versatility.

BLENDED LEARNING + INDIVIDUALIZED COACHING

Here's how we do it . . .

1. You or your candidate will meet with a certified executive coach for about an hour either face-to-face or on the phone to get a brief introduction to the leadership coaching process and the social style model.

2. You will complete a online Social Styles program that takes about eight hours. Using   videos, case studies, and other online exercises, you can complete it at your convenience and at your own pace. I't almost like attending a seminar.

3. You will meet again with your coach to discuss your training experience. You will be introduced to an online multi-rater assessment tool which will determine your social style and your versatility. You then select peers, colleagues, and/or subordinates to confidentially provide you feedback.

4. After your raters assess your interpersonal skills and versatility, you meet again. Your coach who will help you understand your strengths and weaknesses. You will also learn how to increase your versatility. You build an action plan with your coach and implement the ideas on the job.  Your coach will be available questions at any time about specific interpersonal situations where you need help.

5. Finally, we'll work with you to create a custom mini-survey to send to your co-workers to determine how well your plan is working. You'll meet with you coach again to debrief the feedback.
